NEBOSH Case Study

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Steven Coultas, and I work at the Stadium in Hull, home of Hull City Football and Hull FC Rugby league club as the Operations Executive and Event Safety Officer.

I began my career in the industry just over 18 years ago, and I have been involved in all the events held at the stadium, including all the music concerts.

Tell us a bit about NEBOSH – what’s it about?

The NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is the most widely recognised health and safety qualification of its kind, providing line managers with a sound understanding of the principles of risk management.

Why did you enjoy the course?

The tutor made what is usually seen as a dry subject interesting, the course was delivered in a fun and engaging way.

It was also good to learn from other participants who were all from different industries, which included manufacturing, energy companies, and construction.  To learn from their experiences was really valuable.

How will the training be helpful to you in your role?

I want to create a safe environment for employees and keep members of the public safe who attend events.  It has addressed some gaps in my knowledge, and it’s helped me develop and implement new processes and procedures.  It’s also been a great professional development opportunity.

Why would you recommend studying for a NEBOSH qualification to others?

I’d recommend doing a NEBOSH qualification because it’s a globally recognised qualification.  It’s a qualification that employers take seriously and is regarded as a starting qualification for Health and Safety professionals.

How was the experience of learning with East Riding College?

The experience of learning with East Riding College was good, everything went smoothly, very straightforward.  The tutor was excellent.  I did have some apprehensions about remembering everything, but the tutor was very knowledgeable and supportive, which prepared us really well for the exam.

Would you recommend East Riding College to other employers?

I’d recommend East Riding College because everyone’s really helpful and friendly.  You get a lot of support from the College and their pass rates for NEBOSH are really good.
